The Pandora jewelry company, known for its charm bracelets and its $2 billion initial public offering, has launched iphone and Facebook applications designed to create an interactive shopping experience.
The Copenhagen-based jewelry company’s first iPhone app allows consumers to share Pandora fine jewelry pieces via Facebook, e-mail or by adding it to their personalized Pandora “Wish List” page online. Consumers will have instant access to all of Pandora’s collections, including customizable charm bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces and watches.
Pandora’s “Bracelet Designer” is a bracelet building Facebook app. Its 150,000 Facebook fans can select charms from the company’s “Moments” collection to create a personalized charm bracelet and share their unique bracelet designs with others. This app actually launched in October. Consumers can select from seven different sterling silver or 14K gold bracelet options and more than 800 charms.
The Facebook app tracks the cost of each charm selected along with the total cost of the bracelet. When done designing their personal bracelet, consumers can find the nearest Pandora store locations and print or download a picture of the bracelet with the list of selected charms to take to the store or share with others as a gift idea. They also can post their newly created Pandora bracelet to their Facebook status and Twitter page. Once a bracelet is designed, consumers can share comments and "like" designs of other fans as well as view international and local top ten charts listing the bracelet designs that have received the most "likes" and bracelets with the most comments.

Timepiece Tuesday: TW Steel Honors Racer, Omega goes to Court, Hublot iPhone App, London Public Clocks
TW Steel Unveils Emerson Fittipaldi Signature Edition
Amsterdam-based sports watch brand TW Steel has created a timepiece honoring two-time Formula One World Champion, Emerson Fittipaldi. The TW Steel Emerson Fittipaldi timepiece was unveiled prior to the Brazilian Grand Prix, held Nov. 7 in Sao Paulo. The watch, available in 45mm and 48mm editions, was designed in conjunction with the racer, who is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of his first Formula One victory. It is based on the brand’s TECH style collection featuring 316L steel and a Chrono movement that measures time to 1/20th of a second. The timepieces are waterproof to 10 ATM. Incorporating the yellow from Brazil’s national flag, the color is used for the racer’s name on the tachymeter ring, on the watch hands and on the side of the black PVD coated case. The symbolic black and white checkered flag on the watch dial and case back further recognizes Emerson’s racing career, which included 14 Formula One victories and 22 IndyCar wins.
Omega Faces the Supreme Court
The Swiss luxury watch brand Omega has taken its grievance to the U.S. Supreme Court in a case that could have implications for international trade. At issue is whether a copyright holder can block the re-sale of a foreign-made item, after it is later brought to the United States and sold for up to a third less than it might cost elsewhere, CNN reports. The items are Omega watches, and the seller is Costco, a membership warehouse retailer. Omega alleges Costco unlawfully obtained genuine Seamaster-style watches from third parties who had imported them into the United States. The stores then sold them for $1,299, a third below the Swiss firm's suggested retail price of $1,999. The watches were engraved with the Omega emblem trademarked in the United States. Hublot Releases iPhone App
Hublot has gotten onboard the iPhone craze with its own application for enthusiasts of the luxury Swiss watch brand. One of the features of this app is an augmented reality section that allows users to take a picture of their wrist and then virtually try on watches from Hublot’s 2010 collection. In addition, there are 360 degree views of the new watches along with specs, a way to virtually build a Hublot watch and a game that requires the user to keep the power reserve full by shaking the iphone. Swarovski, Tiffany Among Top 10 in ‘Digital IQ’ in a Weak Jewelry Field

Two jewelry companies stand out in a ranking of the digital competence of 72 international luxury brands.
Swarovski and Tiffany ranked eighth and tenth, respectively, in the survey, “Digital IQ Index,” by L2, a membership organization of academics and industry professionals that bills itself as a think tank for digital innovation. While there were standouts in the rankings, much of the jewelry and watch industry received poor scores in the survey.
The survey measured luxury brands in the categories of “Watches & Jewelry,” “Fashion,” “Men’s Fashion,” and Shoes & Leathergoods.” The rankings are the result of measuring each company’s Internet site’s brand effectiveness, digital marketing efforts, social media presence and mobile marketing initiatives. They were ranked with a Digital IQ score and categorized in the following classes: “Genius,” “Gifted,” “Average,” “Challenged,” and “Feeble.” None of the 29 jewelry and watch brands made Genius class. The Watches & Jewelry category had the lowest score and biggest drop in the annual survey. The Fashion category had the highest overall score and the biggest overall gain.
“Amidst gray market concerns, counterfeit fears, and a general hope that ‘the whole Internet thing will go away,’ the Watch & Jewelry category appears paralyzed, posting an average IQ of just 79,” the survey notes. “Limited investment in digital and a lack of leadership have relegated them to ‘Average’ and ‘Challenged’ status in the Index.”
Swarovski (tied for eighth with Giorigo Armani) was tops in the Watches & Jewelry category with a score of 139 and receiving Gifted status. “The creation of a mobile site or application would elevate it to its Genius status,” the survey notes. Tiffany, with a score of 138 and also given the “Gifted” status, was cited for its innovative Engagement Ring Finder iPhone app, which allows users to browse the jeweler’s collection of rings according to shape, setting, metal or design.
Fabergé ranked 56 in the survey and received Average status. However, the company’s e-commerce Web site, which launched in September 2009 (part of the brand’s re-launch under its new owners, Pallinghurst Resources) received a special mention as the possible future of ultra-luxury e-retailing.
“The site’s password-protected inner sanctum preserves the boutique experience while remaining commerce-driven. Product presentation in flash is innovative; gem-encrusted baubles float in the ether of the home page, waiting to be dragged front and center,” the survey notes.
“The most unique feature of the site, however, is its customer service,” it continues. “Clients are immediately paired with a sales advisor who welcomes them and provides access to the site. Advisors are available in 11 languages, 24/7, for calls, instant messages, or video chats. Should a client want to try a piece, a viewing will be scheduled. If a purchase is made, the item will be hand-delivered. This attention to detail ensures that any Fabergé shopping experience, online or in-store, is managed to the brand’s standards. And with price points starting at $50,000, the bar is high.”
Other jewelry and watch brands that earned Gifted status with their ranking and Digital IQ score are as follows:
24. Tag Heuer (Digital IQ score 116)
25. Longines (114)
26. Hublot (113)
Jewelry and watch brands considered Average in the survey are:
34. Montblanc (104)
35. Bulgari (102)
37. Omega (101)
42. David Yurman (90)
Among those considered Challenged are:
44 (tie). Cartier and Raymond Weil (89)
48. Rolex (87)
49. Movado (85)
50. Audemars Piguet (82)
54. Harry Winston (76)
55. IWC (75)
56. Fabergé (74)
Jewelry and watch brands receiving Feeble status are:
63. DeBeers (63)
64 (tie). Chopard and Vacheron Constantin (61)
66. Baccarat (56)
67. Patek Philippe (54)
69. Franck Muller (39)
70. Graff (35)
71. Bulova (32)
72. Buccellati (21)
The top seven luxury brands receiving Genius status are as follows:
1. Coach (171)
2 (tie). Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton (167)
4. Gucci (166)
5. Hugo Boss (157)
6. Burberry (153)
7. Dolce & Gabbana (140)
Jeff Cooper Unveils Bridal Jewelry App
Bridal jewelry designer, Jeff Cooper, has introduced an app for iPhones and iPads that allows brides-to-be the opportunity to virtually try on the company’s designs. It’s now available through the iTunes App Store.
For those looking for bridal rings, the app allows future brides to go through the inventory of Jeff Cooper to virtually try on rings, allows for photo sharing and connects them with an authorized retailer.
The mirroring function puts the jewelry on the person in real time. While trying on, customers can click on the pricing icon, compare similar and matching items, and watch a product video.
For David Cooper, president of Jeff Cooper, the app brings the company’s jewelry directly to more people.
“We're excited to be bringing our designs to an even wider audience,” he said.

The second initiative is the Jewelry Industry Internet Forum, an education program geared to help ensure that high-end retail jewelers, designers, manufacturers and service providers have the knowledge and tools to succeed in the fast-moving world of the Internet.
The JIIF is designed for the industry to learn and share best practices, information, insights and intelligence in online marketing and merchandising, including analytics, design, multi-channel integration and e-commerce, according to show organizers. As a forum for retail and manufacturing executives, JIIF will offer regular access to useful and targeted education and information sharing on a year-round basis. The effort will include at-show education as well as on-line forums and more.
For its first official event, JIIF will highlight a keynote presentation by Mike Gottfried, Head of Industry for Retail & Luxury, from Google to give Centurion participants an insider’s view of what it takes to succeed in today’s ultra-competitive environment and how to take advantage of the Internet as a marketing vehicle.
Gottfried will headline separate sessions for retailers and designers/manufacturers at Centurion 2011.
The third initiative is the Centurion Showcase, an online extension of the luxury trade fair that is being launched during the show.
The Centurion Showcase has up-to-date digital catalogs of participating branded exhibitors, updated show information, and news and events. During the show and throughout the year, retailers will be able to use the catalogs at the point of sale and to e-mail to and print product pictures and details for their customers. Branded manufacturers will be able to use the catalogs to show new product and provide ongoing support for their Centurion retailers.
Ice Unveils ‘Try It On’ Mobile App
Online jewelry retailer Ice hops onto the augmented reality (AR) bandwagon with a mobile app that allows shoppers to virtually “try on” rings and bracelets before purchasing. It is currently only available for iPhones while an Android version of the app will be available later this year.
AR is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input. In this case Ice is using the technology via a mobile app to provide digital shoppers the opportunity to view the Ice catalog of jewelry products, select an item of their liking and opt to virtually "try on" the piece. Utilizing their personal mobile device camera, a picture of the shoppers hand will act as the landscape for the ring or bracelet of interest. The desired piece of jewelry can then be super imposed on the picture. Ice shoppers will be invited to then share their “try it on” pictures with friends and family via email, Facebook and Twitter, or add to their wish list.
“It's about enhancing our customer's experience, customer engagement with our products as well as overall conversion. For the first time, we are offering our customers with the complete shopping experience,” said Shmuel Gniwisch, CEO of Ice. “No longer will online shoppers have to question "will this look good on me?" they will have the answer right on their smartphone desktop and be able to ask their family and friend's thoughts from around the globe with just a few clicks.”
You can find the app by following this link.
