Timepiece Tuesday: Watches and Cars

Cars and watches have gone together since the early days of driving. Whether the person is an antique car enthusiast, a luxury car lover, or someone who demands performance and speed, watch brands have always created timepieces that catered to these passions. Below is a selection of new watches that are designed to fuel the passionate car enthusiast.

Frédérique Constant Honors Peking to Paris Participants
Frédérique Constant on October 16 welcomed the participants of the 2010 edition of the Peking to Paris Rally, an antique car race that spans 14,360 km (8,930 miles) through 11 countries (opening photo).\

The race, billed as “'The Ultimate Driving Adventure” began September 10 at the Great Wall of China and ended in Place Vendôme at the Frédérique Constant finish line. A total of 103 teams of drivers struggled through difficult terrain, extreme weather conditions and mechanical mishaps. In the Frederique Constant VIP Area, guests were able to preview the brand’s new Peking to Paris Limited Edition timepieces (image not available). The collection will be launched officially during BaselWorld, the international watch & jewelry fair, being held March 2011 in Basel, Switzerland.

The Swiss watch brand hosted a gala dinner for all participants on October 17 at the InterContinental Paris-Le Grand (above photo). During the dinner, Peter Stas, Frederique Constant founder and CEO, awarded “The Spirit of the Rally” prize to Daniel Ward and David Ingleby who drove a 1914 Lancia Theta, one of the oldest cars in the race. The award is given to the team that overcame the most obstacles during the grueling race.

The Shelby Mustang Watch
MARCH LA.B has rolled out a limited-edition Shelby watch that commemorates the 1968 Shelby EXP 500 Mustang hardtop prototype, Edmunds InsideLine reports. A total of 200 watches will be made. The Shelby watch has a black "chassis" and a wood dial that are meant to imitate the look of the EXP 500's dashboard. The car that serves as muse, known as the Green Hornet, had a custom Shelby hood, independent suspension and fuel-injected 428 "X" engine. The watch will be available starting November 10, at an as-yet-unannounced price.

A New Ferrari Collection
Ferrari Stores of the world are bringing out a limited edition of 299 Ferrari Paddock Chronograph timepieces, Edmunds InsideLine reports. The new watch is actually a set of three Paddock Chronograph models, which come in green, white or red lacquered presentation boxes. One is a Black Carbon version that comes with a pair of Prancing Horse logo cuff links made of carbon fiber and stainless steel. Another has a Ferrari-logo-shaped paperweight and the third has a special Ferrari jacquard necktie. All three have leather straps with Ferrari shield embossing, matte polished stainless steel case and Swiss quartz movements. They are priced starting at the equivalent of $1,050 at Ferrari's stores or online.

The Spyker Supercar Watch
Dutch supercar manufacturer and Saab owner Spyker launched its own line of fine watches, MotorCrave writes. Manufactured by Geneva-based Thierry Chaunu of Expression D’Artistes International, the watches feature Spyker badge bezels, hand stitched leather bands and a variety of components that take inspiration from Spyker design. The watch will be offered in 18K grey and rose gold finishes, of which 250 examples each will be made, and polished steel and matt black titanium finishes, of which 1,000 each. Prices range from $9,750 to $30,500.

Frédérique Constant, Cohiba Cigars Launch Limited Edition Watches

Luxury Swiss watchmaker Frédérique Constant Genève has partnered with Cohiba premium cigars to create two bespoke wristwatches exclusively for the U.S. and its territories, including the U.S Virgin Islands. The “Frédérique Constant for Cohiba Limited Edition” timepieces will be unveiled exclusively at a private VIP reception on September 22 at Club Macanudo in New York City.

Designed in homage to the Cohiba brand, the handcrafted Swiss wristwatches boast an ivory-colored dial with tobacco brown Roman numerals, housed in a sleek case embellished by a hand-sewn tobacco brown Croco-calf strap.

Only 376 individually-numbered pieces will be available. The steel and the rose gold-plated wristwatches (limited to 188 pieces each) will be available solely at authorized Frédérique Constant retailers.

The watches and cigars are presented inside a wooden humidor box with a crystal window to reveal the product inside. Each humidor will contain 25 Cohiba Crystal cigars, handmade in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Cohiba cigar was reformulated in the 1990s and is the only Cohiba cigar that can be purchased legally in the United States.

Frédérique Constant Runabout Moonphase Watches

Frédérique Constant rose-gold plated Moonphase retails for $2,495.

With the iconic Pepsi Cola sign in Long Island City shining brightly as a backdrop across the East River, Manhattan’s Water Club restaurant was a fitting place for Frédérique Constant to introduce the newest version of its Runabout timepiece collection: The Runabout Moonphase.

The 43mm diameter watch is available in stainless steel or plated rose gold with a delicate guilloche decoration in the center, hand-applied Arabic indexes, and well-positioned day, date and moonphase indicators. The decorated automatic movement can be seen through the sapphire caseback. It is available in a limited quantity of 1,888 pieces per material.

The stainless steel Moonphase retails for $2,350.

Peter Stas, managing director of the Swiss watch brand, said the inspiration for the watch is the small wooden runaround boats invented in the 1920s by Garfield A. Wood. These boats are designed to hold between four and eight people and are well suited to moving about on the water.

Each Runabout timepiece comes with its own handmade wooden case that echoes the craftsmanship of the yachts. Also in the box is a miniature reproduction of a classic runabout boat (pictured below).

To promote the Runabout collection, Frédérique Constant will serve as the official sponsor of the 39th annual Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance Wooden Boat Show, at the North shore of Lake Tahoe in Carnelian Bay, Calif. The annual event, founded in 1972, will be held this year on August 12 and 13. More than 100 classic and antique boats and more than 5,000 visitors are expected to attend. The best vintage boats in North America compete in 13 specialized classes for top honors and bragging rights, in what is considered to be one of the premier judged wooden boat shows in the world.

Miss Earth Nicole Faria is Frédérique Constant’s New Brand Ambassador

Swiss watch brand Frédérique Constant went to India to sign its newest global brand ambassador, Miss Earth Nicole Faria.

The beauty queen is more than just a pretty face. She is a strong conservationist and environmentalist actively involved with earth-related initiatives. The Geneva-based watch brand recently announced this partnership in Mumbai where it presented Faria a special Chocolate Double Heart Beat watch to commence their association.

“I was amazed to hear of the fact that Frédérique Constant is a rare brand that supports earth-related initiatives,” Faria said. “I strongly believe that this earth is a legacy that we need to pass on to future generations and the time to act is now. Similarly Frédérique Constant is a brand that one would like to pass on to Gen-Next as a legacy. From the fashionista point of view, its classical styles is exactly what the Indian customer requires today.”

Originally from Bangalore, Faria is passionate about modeling and improving the world. Some of her more memorable moments were when she won the Miss India crown in 2010 and later the Miss Earth title. Her hobbies include listening to music, dancing, reading and visiting orphanages.

“In India, we decided to do something daringly different,” said Sebastien Cretegny, International Sales Manager, Frédérique Constant, said. “When we met Miss Earth Nicole Faria, we felt that there was a sharing of passion, especially when she spoke about her conservation projects. I am proud to announce that this is the first time that Frédérique Constant has associated with a beauty pageant icon anywhere in the world and it happened in India.”

10 New Jewelry Designs from the Centurion Show

8k gold ring with diamond pave is centered with a large emerald cabochon.

It appears that luxury jewelry designers are through experimenting with less expensive materials (due to the economic collapse and high cost of materials) and have returned to producing creations with high-karat gold and platinum as well as big bold gemstones and lots of diamond pavé, if the Centurion Jewelry Show is any indication of what’s to come this year. And I believe it is.

The first major U.S. tradeshow of the year was held Feb. 3 - 5 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The invitation-only event caters to the luxury end of the market. One of the things it provides is the first chance for those in the U.S. to view new designs for the year. I presented an early appetizer of the pieces on display with the Centurion Design Award winners. Now here are 10 more jewelry designers that caught my attention during the show. Enjoy.

Erica Courtney is one of the few designers who can be on trend while maintaining exceptionally high standards, presented an entire collection based on green, including this 18k gold ring is centered with a large emerald cabochon (top photo). The intricate, sculptural-like details of gold are further enhanced with 18k diamond pave.

The Tilley engagement ring by Jeff Cooper Designs features a single row of pave diamonds that tapers toward the center, giving extra emphasis to the center stone. It is available in platinum or 18k gold.

Damiani has come out with a ceramic jewelry line called D.Icon, which includes this ring made of white ceramic with pink gold and diamonds (0.21 cts.).

The Mimi So Phoenix Stackable Band has18k rose gold and leaf work covered in diamonds. It is stackable with other rings in the collection.

Fope Gioielli introduced a flexible cross-over bracelet with elastic wrapping features to the Flex'it Solo line. It is made of 18-carat gold, with or without diamonds.

18k white gold heart shaped hoops with detachable London Blue Topaz drops by Lisa Nik.

Syna Jewels, a new exhibitor, presented a series of highly polished chalcedony drops set with 18k yellow gold from the Mogul collection.

All of the operations of the Frédérique Constant Classics Manufacture Worldtimer is done through the crown, which simplifies setting the time and date, and calibrating the worldtimer. The watch is powered by the FC-718 caliber movement, built in house. The dial is available in a guilloché design or with a silver world map in its center. The watch is also available in steel for $3,450 and rose-gold for $4,150.
