Retailers Upbeat on Platinum Jewelry Sales

Retailers are showing a renewed sense of optimism when it comes to sales of platinum jewelry, according to a recent survey by Platinum Guild International, an organization that promotes the platinum jewelry to consumers and the jewelry trade.

The survey, conducted by GFK Audits and Surveys, reports positive growth in platinum bridal jewelry sales for the first half of 2010, and a projected 3 percent increase through the end of the year.

A total of 56 percent of the 419 small chain and independent retailers surveyed plan to purchase additional platinum product through the end of 2010. In particular, they are stocking up on platinum bridal inventory as they prepare for increased engagement business during the holidays.

The strongest factor contributing to the strength of platinum sales in 2010 was the rising price of gold, PGI said. Platinum’s competitive pricing against gold attributed to 31 percent of retailers stating platinum’s price as a positive attribute, while an additional 29 percent found value in platinum’s unique properties of durability and strength.

The survey also reported that some retailers attributed platinum sales increases due to their staff suggesting platinum to customers more often than before, PGI said.

More than a quarter of the retailers surveyed are considered Preferred Platinum Partners, those who work closely with PGI to increase platinum jewelry sales.

Jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz played what appears to be an exclusive role in Kim Kardashian’s jewelry for her August 20 wedding to Kris Humphries.

“Kim chose a diamond eternity band set in platinum by Lorraine Schwartz, approximately 12 carats, with an estimated price tag of $60,000,” said Jewelry expert Michael O'Connor. “Kim clearly wanted the best quality wedding ring, and since the diamonds are set in platinum the setting won't fade or tarnish - making it the perfect symbol of enduring love.”

All totaled, Kardashian wore approximately $10 million worth of jewels on her wedding day, which included a diamond headpiece and diamond drop earrings, also designed by Lorraine Schwartz, E News reports. The entertainment news media company will air the wedding as a two-part special October 8 and 9.

Danhov Adds Floral Patterns to its Bridal Jewelry Designs

LAS VEGAS Taking his cue from New York Fashion Week, where floral patterns was one of the main inspirations for many of the designs, Khajag "Jack" Hovsepian, the founder and head designer of bridal jewelry brand, Danhov, introduced a collection that is all floral inspired.

The company, founded in 1984, moved to a consumer brand two years ago and has grown quickly to now have approximately 50 retail outlets. All the jewelry is hand-made or hand constcuted at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters. No moulds are used in the process. His booth at the JCK Luxury tradefair was humming with eager retailers wanting to stock up on his designs.

The Petalo line of platinum and 18k white gold bridal jewelry has intricate carvings of tulips, sunflowers and other flora throughout the engagement and matching wedding bands. No matter which way the rings face, it provides a delicate appearance of a flower. The engagement rings retail for about $4,000, not counting the center stone.
