Happy Holidays

Jewelry News Network will be taking some downtime over the next few days. Postings will still occur but will be done sporadically through December 27. Enjoy the holidays.

All the Best,

John Hardy Opens its First Boutique

After more than 19 years in business, John Hardy, the Bali-based silver jewelry designer and manufacturer, is making its move into retail. In partnership with the Masari Group, the company will open a 237-square-foot store in the Plaza Indonesia shopping mall in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Influenced by the natural beauty and spirit of Bali, the boutique is designed to mirror the experience of the John Hardy workshop with the curves of its rice terraces, bamboo groves and water-smoothed river stones. Guy Bedarida, John Hardy creative director and head designer, created a pair of hand-carved door handles, made of sterling silver and Indonesian black palm wood, the dragon handle on the store’s interior grasps a silver ring, paved in black sapphires. The dragon’s eyes are set with Moon Quartz—all fitting materials given that Naga is a revered mythological creature symbolizing prosperity and good luck throughout Asia.

Inside the store, visitors will find a hand-carved bamboo panel floor depicting a Naga curling around Mount Agung, the highest and holiest mountain in Bali. Its scales are hand-hammered sterling silver, enhanced with black volcanic sand and its tail is crafted from crushed terracotta. Fifteen floor-to-ceiling bamboo columns cradle silver-framed jewelry cases where John Hardy product is displayed.

In celebration of the boutique’s opening, Bedarida created a sterling silver and 18k yellow gold Macan pendant set with blue and white sapphires, and a Naga cuff in sterling silver and 18k yellow gold with diamond pave and cabochon rubies. The flagship will carry the full John Hardy collection, along with select pieces from the limited-edition Cinta collection.

Hublot Ad Spurs Discussion, Controversy

An advertisement using the bruised and beaten face of Formula 1 head Bernie Ecclestone with the statement, “See what people will do for a Hublot,” has created a bit a controversy. Ecclestone was mugged in London and his Hublot watch was one of the items stolen. He sent the picture, taken right after the mugging, with the statement used in the ad to Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot. The ad was attempt at humor and a way to draw focus to a serious issue, according to Biver, who said he created the ad at the insistence of Ecclestone. It appeared last week in the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune as a one-off. But there are rumors that it may become a full-blown campaign. A story about the ad appeared in the Jewelry News Network Tuesday.

In the Wednesday edition of the Financial Times in its “Judgment Call” section (subscription required), the U.K.-based newspaper asked an executive, brand specialist and academic about their advice when trying to tackle this type of an issue and using humor to do it. Responses ranged from Barbara Stocking, chief executive of Oxfam, who cautioned about the long-term goal of such ads, to Rita Clifton, chairman of Interbrand London, who said that using topical events “can be a good route. But it depends who is doing it and how.” Meanwhile, Rohit Deshpande, professor of marketing at Harvard Business School, said the ad “is in poor taste, is bad marketing, and creates the wrong kind of long-term consumer impression.” What do you think?

Today’s Twitter Feed

From mine to market there is no rest for the creation and movement of jewels around the world. It is much too dynamic and diverse an industry for one blog. That’s why there’s a Jewelry News Network Twitter feed. The 11 Twitter feeds for today deal with mines, conflict diamonds, upcoming jewelry exhibitions, a jewelry catsuit and a “Gems Among Us” essay contest.

JNN to Return to the September Hong Kong Fair

Once again I’ll be attending the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, the largest fine jewelry tradeshow in the world. It’s an event that has grown so large it is now held at two separate venues:

* The Asia World-Expo next to Hong Kong International Airport for diamonds, colored gemstones, pearls and equipment will be held September 19-23; and

* The Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, in the Wan Chai district overlooking Victoria Harbor for finished jewelry, September 21-25.

The combined exhibition space totals more than 1.4 million square feet. For the first time since the show was expanded to two venues, I will attend the Asia World-Expo portion of the show.

In 2011, the show saw 16 percent growth in attendance to 51,500 industry professionals from 155 countries and regions who had a chance to look at the products and services of more than 3,450 vendors from 46 countries. Obviously, the draw is the high-growth Asian market led by China. Hong Kong bills itself as the gateway to the economic powerhouse.

Luxury, designer and mass-produced and antique jewelry will be on display using all known jewelry making materials, including, a pavilion dedicated to jadeite, extremely popular in China.

One of the new additions to the show is free digital marketing workshops. Presentations will include know-how and practical tips but also statistics and data taken from JewelleryNetAsia’s original research and analytics.

Another new focus is The JNA Awards, an industry-wide event that honors and recognizes excellence and achievement in the global jewelry trade with an Asian focus. The awards ceremony and gala dinner will be held on September 20 at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong. The awards are organized by Jewellery News Asia in collaboration with the UBM Awards.

I am looking forward to seeing the luxury and designer jewelry coming out of Asia to see how much it has grown and changed from last year.

Gone Fishing

Since Friday I have been taking an unexpected but much needed break from work and from my computers. I plan on extending this respite until Tuesday. I'll be back full time on Wednesday. See you then.

There's an App for the Jewelry News Network

The Jewelry News Network is steadily growing its digital footprint. It has now gone mobile through an application for Android phones.

The new app is easy to use and is constantly updated so you can quickly learn about the latest news, products and trends in the jewelry  industry anywhere your phone goes. The best part is the app is free. Click on an image for a larger view.

There is advertising on the app but I am assured by Notice Software, an Austin, Texas-based company supplying the service, that it is not intrusive. There will be an iphone version of the app as early as July. I encourage everyone with Android phones to download the application and let me know how you like it.

Have You Been Missing Jewelry News Network?

Jewels from Goshwara during the Luxury at JCK show in Las Vegas.

Well I'm back as I have been taking care of business and personal items as well as just getting organized and back to a schedule since returning from Las Vegas Jewelry Week. I have lots to report from the well attended jewelry shows in Vegas. Creativity was in full view throughout the shows and buyers were enthusiastic and positive with what they saw. In the coming weeks you will notice changes to Jewelry News Network. In particular you will see it even become more focused on new product, but there will still be room for business trends and important issues that effect the industry. So be patient as a flood of new stories begins. And as always, thank you for your support.

Jewelry News Network Turns 1

It’s hard to believe but my little blog that could is a year old today. It began with the idea that there was a need for a place online to bring consumers who are passionate about jewelry with jewelry, fashion and luxury professionals with stories that appeal to both groups.

The year has gone surprisingly well. Readership on the blog has grown at an average of 37 percent per month. I started a Twitter page that has grown as constantly and steady as the blog along with a facebook fan page. And, because of this blog, I’ve been able to reach larger audiences through Forbes.com, JewelleryNetAsia and Farlang.

This first year was an experiment to see if this type of format would have appeal. The answer is a resounding yes. There will be a number of changes for the second year. Among them is the Jewelry News Network will now be accepting advertising. In addition, there will be a newsletter for the blog.

Further down the road there are plans to expand the website and to increase our international coverage by building a team of correspondents in key jewelry markets around the world. The Jewelry News Network will be a network between the jewelry industry and passionate consumers and network within the global jewelry industry.

So thank you for taking the time to read this blog and I look forward to making this publication bigger and better in the upcoming year. As always, please contact me with any concerns, ideas or advice.

I’m Back

I haven’t posted anything new in about a week. It wasn’t planned. Somehow spending time with my family this past weekend extended into taking care of personal things that I’ve neglected and trying to get back to a scheduled since I broke my arm two months ago. Just like that the week was over. I think it’s the longest I’ve gone without posting a story (although I did post earlier today).

It’s been spring here for a while now and the weather is finally catching up to the season. With the warmth comes a very busy time for the jewelry industry and for me. On Tuesday, I’ll be live tweeting from Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Auction. The following week I’ll be in Europe at the headquarters of one of the world’s best-known luxury brands (more on that soon). I am also working on an in-depth piece about luxury brands and digital media. It’s a continuation of a story I wrote for the Financial Times.

There are other things on the horizon as well. In the meantime I’d like to point you to a story by Sílvia Taveira on her blog titled, Adventures in the world of jewelry. The Portuguese resident is not only an excellent writer but she is also a skilled fine jewelry designer. It’s easy to see that she has a passion and strong understanding when it comes to design, fashion and individual style. In this story, “The 5 things I don’t know about JAR,” Sílvia examines her fascination with one of the world’s most successful and most reclusive luxury jewelry designers.

Enjoy

Jewelry News Network is ‘Blog of the Month’

The U.K. has really taken to Jewelry News Network. My readership has been growing steadily across the pond and my new friends are active in their support of my web publication. The latest show of support is from Make Jewellery magazine, which named Jewelry News Network as its “Blog of the Month” in its April issue.

Make Jewellery magazine is led by editor Lorraine Luximon and has a circulation of approximately 40,000. It is billed as the UK's glossiest and most dedicated jewelry making magazine. Each issue contains step-by-step guides to create designer-style jewelry on a shoestring, and includes projects on everything from simple bead stringing and wirework to more advanced techniques such as polymer and precious metal clay and resin. It’s for folks who love to create handmade jewelry whether as a hobby or as a business.

The blog appears in the magazine’s “Bookmark this!” section, which spotlights places to visit on the Internet.

In addition to featuring me and my work, it showcases jewelry from Montblanc, Angelique de Paris and Leibish & Co., which have recently appeared on my blog.

Happy New Year

A toast for you. Thank you so much for your support and expect great things from the Jewelry News Network in the coming year.

Here's hoping for a happy, healthful, joyful year.

All the Best,
Anthony
